One ounce of this fiber fills a 6x9 bag and is enough to generously embellish over 30 art batts based on the amount of nepps (a very large pinch) I find aesthetically pleasing. Use more or less according to your preferences. This fiber is UV sensitive. It will change color when exposed to prolonged sunlight. Spinning the tweed yarn is easy and fun. I use a supported longdraw, letting plenty of twist into the drafting zone to grab onto the nepps. Some extra twist in plying helps keep the nepps in place as you finish the yarn. Wash, dry, a few quick snaps, and the yarn is ready to be knitted or woven into beautiful rare-breed tweed fabric. These nepps are Merino Wool and have been dyed an array of beautifully saturated colors. The wool in the outer layer of fleece was ordinarily longer, thicker and coarser than the wool from the inner layers. These fibers would be spun into worsted yarn. The inner layers had softer wool of varying lengths that would be spun into woolen yarn. Shorter fibers would be further sorted by grade into heavier and finer wools; the heavier ones would be used to make thicker yarn for the warp. Take a piece of roving, draft it a bit and then focus on a small piece that will start your yarn. Wrap a small piece around the hook of your spindle and twist. Over twisting this small amount is okay because when you let it go, the twist is going to travel up your fiber. Pay attention to your spin direction, otherwise your fiber will unravel. How to Process Fine Fleece into Nep-Free Yarn Neps are best described as dense, tangled clumps of the short fibers of the fleece. Some people don’t worry about neps and allow them to form to add texture to their yarn, but others prefer a nep-free, smooth yarn. There is no specific advantage to either, whether you like them or not is based off a personal preference..

The most widely used method is mixing prepared fiber balls such as wool nepps into the main fiber stock before carding. The fiber effect can be varied by the mixing ratio and the card setting, in addition to the usual yarn parameters of linear density and twist. 3. Multi-coloured Nep Yarn. I ended up with four balls roughly 12-13g each. It's critical not to wind the yarn too tight or the dye won't penetrate into the yarn closer to the centre of the ball. 2. Soak the yarn in warm water and a bit of white vinegar. Easy does it. You don't want the yarn to felt or get into a knotted mess. 3. Get your dyes out and prepare them.

Wool Nepps are small bits of wool that are produced as a bi-product of wool processing. These nepps are hand dyed with a range of beautiful colors. The second pass yielded this result, smoother and with more blending visible. Snip up some other yarn into tiny bits and put a pile of it into your fiber hand first, UNDER the commercial top. As you draft, make sure to let some of the lumps into the triangle. My default spin is in between the extremes. I like a shorter backward draft on combed top. Mostly because I do love spinning hand dyed braids, but you probably know that. The swatch on the bottom to the left is 100% my default draft/prep combo. I have been spinning that way as a default for years, but I do adjust my spin for particular projects. On the righthand side of the card the colours are blended (or not) in three-ply yarns. From right to left: pure orange; two plies orange and one green; one ply orange and two green; pure green. To the left of the pure green is a wide band of 2-ply spun from orange and green carded together, roughly 50/50. (I didn't weigh it!).

When using yarn, those with thick-and-thin textures and whacky novelty yarns are the way to go. Handspun, with lots of texture, is always a winner, though they can run a bit more expensive. Our rule when it comes to felting with yarn, the nubbier and less-even or consistent, the better.

It has big sharp spikes which tease apart the fiber. Push in a little bit of washed fleece in at the front and then push away the boat (that big swinging part with spikes on it). In a few seconds light bits of fluff comes out the other side. Sometimes fleece can be quite tough to open up after its been washed. Take the roving or strips of batt and process it with 2 row mini combs or even the serious-looking 4 or 5 pitch (row) combs. I don't bother with a diz, I just pull it off the combs and roll into a little bun, then spin it worsted. The vm, nepps, short fibers, stay behind the combs and the wool in front is perfect. As far as the nepps go, when they do stay in, they look really neat, especially, the nepps being in a different color then I was currently spinning. Nepps are going to take me some practice getting use to, but fun nonetheless. I wonder if my homemade nepps will be different since they aren't yet the hard wool balls, but rather, the tiny soft. A smooth draw was therefore difficult so a supported longdraw was used, where nepps could be removed during spinning. The result was a fairly airy but rather lumpy two-plied yarn. The range of colours and processing and spinning methods demonstrated the variety of fleeces from the seven breeds, making for a most interesting project.

I sorted them out by color and used some of the little bits and some Perendale Wool I had to create little rolags to spin woolen for a fine, light, colorful yarn. Nepps went everywhere. I had not used a large amount to begin with, but what I did have went everywhere leaving few in the yarn.

Some common fabric defects are given below: 1. Broken Ends: If a warp yarn is absent in the fabric for a very short or long distance and then this fabric defect is called broken ends. 2. Broken Picks: If a weft yarn is absent in the fabric for a very short or long width, and then this fabric defect is called broken picks. I love chain-plied yarn. I love how plump it is compared to 2-ply yarn. I love how it keeps the clear distinct color of the single and fiber. I love how I can take one single from one bobbin and ply it into something that looks like it came off of three. What I don't love is stopping in t. What a wonderful world. The colors was very bright and my first thought was to dye it before spinning. Right around the same time I got my hands on some walnuts and solar dyed chunks of all of the colors with the walnuts. I divided the dyed wool into small nests and spun without looking at what color came next and made a 3ply.
